Panhandle Nordic Club Newsletter for October, 2005

President’s Message

Hear Ye, Hear Ye…….The president is going to think of
something witty, possibly new and exciting to report
for the initial newsletter of the season. I’ve lost
my swagger after all these years. I didn’t want to
repeat myself which is not easy at this advanced age.
I was tempted to dig into the archives of past
newsletters and see if anyone would notice.

The Nordic club had an active summer hike schedule.
I went on some of the August hikes and my left knee is
still reminding me of the fun. Geoff knows how to
lead a good hike. Next time I will bring my machete
and motorized hiking boots along. In Canada, killer
bees were found along the trail and some of the
members were found also.

So what’s on for our upcoming Nordic club season?
Snow would be a nice addition after last year’s
meltdown. This year we will not do the meditations,
prayers and chants to the snow fairies and assorted
snow icons. Obviously they went to California last
season. Instead a little black magic and superstition
is in order. I have taken the lead by shaving off my
beard for winter. How silly is that? I’m now
experiencing cold sores due to lack of coverage and I
find food falling more frequently or is that I am just
more aware of this now?

So here’s a list of things to do to ensure a good snow
fall

1) Keep washing and waxing your car on a weekly
basis

2) Plan a warm weather trip for the middle of
January

3) Wash your outside windows

4) Continue making fall plantings in the garden

5) It’s never too late to put on that new roof or
paint the house

6) Delay blowing out your sprinkler system

7) Don’t wax those skis yet

8) Your winter wardrobe looks fine, buy some
shorts and flip flops.

A full schedule of activities and presentations are
planned. I cannot delve into these right now. I’d
better get busy. Or maybe I will just lets things
happen to fool the weather gods. The feeling of
responsibility is overwhelming. Remember to wear
summer clothing to the next meeting…..Jim

November 1st Nordic Club meeting

First club meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 1 at Fernan Ranger
Station at 7:00. Geoff will give a presentation on
the fabulous activities that the club sponsors. And
you thought we just did winter activities and a couple
hikes? Outhouse renovation and swamp draining are
just a few of the fun things you can participate in.
See ya there.

Fall Cleanup at 4th of July

There were ten stalwart club members who went to work
sprucing up the new outhouse by the picnic area. A
privacy screen was added, new paint, rock entry, fume
pipe added and completion on the structure which will
keep the outhouse protected from the elements. And it
is heads above any outhouse that Mt. Spokane offers.
It could be a new incentive to ski at 4th of July. We
should post it on our website.

Administrative Assistant is Needed

The Nordic Club is in dire need of a secretary. Jo Ann
resigned to take care of family matters. She did a
wonderful job and left a complete notebook of what the
job entails. The primary function is to be able to
order pizza, agree with everything the president says
and correct his poor grammar without him knowing it.

We have upgraded the secretarial position to
administrative assistant and of course the same
wonderful benefits will be provided. This person will
have to deal with last minute rantings and emails from
the president (he swaggers by email now) and updates
the membership list. Also some correspondence and
posting club meetings, taking minute notes and helping
with the newsletter which is very easy since the
president is so helpful with this and we now post this
on our website. Basically they would need to have
computer skills that the president is incapable of
(wouldn’t take much). Also this person gets to enjoys
gourmet meals (pizza, soda and stale animal crackers)
at our board meetings with a delightful group of fun
folks who lead this ship.

Trips, Fun and Frivolity

Ron and Roberta are planning a ski trip (obviously
they have not heeded the president’s message) and are
going north to ski at Kimberly, Bow Lake and Canmore
in BC. They have found some lodgings that would offer
a nice addition to the trip. Date to be set.

Jim is thinking about a quick trip to Rossland, near
Trail BC and Red Mt. Ski area and staying at a
favorite dive. This trip is not for the faint of
heart.

Bring your ideas for day and weekend ski and snowshoe
trips to our first meeting.
