| Panhandle Nordic Club Minutes November 1, 2005 USFS Building Fernan, Coeur dAlene, Idaho The meeting was called to order by President Jim McMillen. Introductions of Board Members were made. Glenns Retirement: Glenn Truscott retired this week from a long career with the United State Forest Service. Much to everyones relief, the Ranger has agreed to let Glenn keep a key to the meeting room at Fernan Ranger Station. Glenn will remain the clubs liaison to the Forest Service. Everyone gave Glenn a hand for a long career and well deserved retirement. Glenn has lots of activities and study planned for the coming years. Presentation: Geoff Harvey gave a PowerPoint presentation with narrative on club winter activities. The pictures included pictures of club activities, the 4th of July ski area and the new restroom, work day activities, past ski trips, and winter scenes. The presentation presented a good overview of the clubs winter activities. Another presentation, possibly on the summer hike/bike/canoe activities is planned for next spring. Membership: Your $10 Panhandle Nordic Club membership fee can be mailed to: Geoff Harvey P.O. Box 1352 Hayden, ID 83835 Workday: A workday is planned to clear trails for the ski season. This will be Saturday November 12. Everyone will meet in the 4th of July ski area parking lot at 9 am. Participants are asked to bring chain saws and any other equipment needed to work on the swampy area and to cut the trail clear of branches and fallen trees. In the future, further work on trails 614, 905, and 1575 is planned. The club would like to expand the snowshoe/dog/ski area and the club would also like to expand the trail system so that people can ski as far as Beauty Saddle and Killarney Mountain. Glenn Truscott said that the Forest Supervisor would like to hear comments on the ski area from club members. They can write their positive comments about the USFSs efforts to keep the 4th of July strictly a ski area and non-motorized to: Ranotta McNair, Forest Supervisor Idaho Panhandle National Forest 3815 Schreiber Way Coeur dAlene, Idaho 83815 It was agreed that everyone should try to get a letter to Ranotta McNair in support of the 4th of July ski area and in support of the expanded trails the Forest Service has mapped out on their new map. Ski Swaps: Two ski swaps are planned for next week. Fitness Fanatics at 12425 East Trent (in the valley on Trent) carries only cross-country gear. This is really one of the best places to get good used cross-country equipment. Fitness Fanatics also carries snowshoes, both new and used and they have a chart to use to get the proper fit for your snowshoes, which is very important. This starts promptly at 9 am. Be there early if you need gear. The second ski swap is at Kootenai County Fairgrounds. Hilma is going to deliver our brochures there. This swap is for all types of ski gear and you can usually find some cross-country ski gear. This swap is mainly for downhill gear, but over the years, the cross-country section has grown. This also starts at 9. The lines are long. Membership: Membership in the Nordic Club is still $10 per household per year. Park and Ski stickers are $25. Please mark yours for Area 11 as that money comes back to 4th of July for improvements to the ski trails. Fitness
Fanatics will give Nordic Club members 10% off on
purchases. Donna can make cards or we can give
Fitness Fanatics a membership list. Canada:
Ronn and Roberta Rich are considering a trip to Canada
and want to know if there is interest in it. This would
be a 5-day trip as the drive is quite long to this area
and not worth it for a short three-day trip. The first
leg would possibly be Kimberley, which has an excellent
groomed cross-country trail and good, reasonable
accommodations. The second day could be at a rustic lodge
that Ronn and Roberta have seen. The bathrooms are down
the hall, not in each room, but that is common at Priest
Lake and Seeley Lake where the club has traveled in the
past. The third day would be Canmore. Their season is
summer and they have many motel/hotel rooms which they
have trouble filling in the winter. This makes rooms
quite reasonable and ski areas nearby where used in the
Olympics, which were held in Canada a few years ago. Ronn
said there are no fees for skiing there and the woodsy
scenery makes it a pleasant experience. It is an 8-hour
drive to this area, so a stay of a couple of days would
be desirable. This trip would possibly be near
Presidents Day. Ronn will put out a sign up sheet
at next meeting. |
